Hanger bolts are double-ended headless fasteners used to suspend objects from wood beams or to attach items to wood.

Hanger bolts are double-ended headless fasteners used to suspend objects from wood beams or to attach items to wood. They have different threads at each end, Lag style threads for fastening into wood on one end while the other end features a machine screw style coarse (UNC) thread that accepts a hex nut or can thread into an internally threaded (tapped) hole, such as a threaded insert. Rod coupling nuts are often used with Hanger Bolts to mate them to a length of Threaded Rod to suspend electrical conduits, junction boxes, fixtures and ducting. The furniture industry uses them with corner brackets, tee nuts and whenever wood and machine screw threads are needed in a single fastener. Hanger bolts are also known as couch bolts or hanger screws.

For easy installation, since Hanger bolts are a headless fastener, users will thread 2 hex nuts against each other on the machine thread end of the Hanger Bolt. Using a properly sized socket wrench to fit the hex nuts they then drive the lag threaded end into the wood to the depth desired. It is important to drill a pilot hole into the wood, slightly smaller than the screw diameter, before installing the Hanger Bolt. Failing to use a pilot hole may cause the wood to split. Pilot hole choices for a given diameter will vary depending on the density of the wood. Soft woods can accept a smaller pilot hole and greater bite/engagement of the threads into the wood. Harder woods usually require a slightly larger pilot drill size to avoid splitting the wood during installation. Suggested Pilot Drill Sizes are noted in theTechnical Specifications for each item. The user should always do a test installation using their chosen pilot drill size to ensure the best result.
