Taper Taps have a chamfer on the first 8-10 threads. The chamfered threads assist the tapping process by helping start the tap square to the pilot hole and by progressively removing more material with each rotation of the tap until it eventually creates a full thread. The high number of chamfered threads means that Taper Taps are the easiest taps to use when tapping by hand.
