W.L.Fuller Tapered point drill bits are ideal for drilling pilot holes in wood and plastics for the tapered shanks and threads of traditional wood screws. The use of the properly sized tapered point pilot bit for tapered shank wood screws results in a more secure connection of the wood screw into the fastening material. The tapered pilot hole will match the tapered shank and thread profile of the screw, causing the materials being fastened to compress together, creating a tighter stronger bond.
Fuller Taper Point Drills are made of hardened High Speed Steel to hold their sharp cutting edges longer in woods and plastics, they are not meant for use in metals. They are a perfect match for use with Fuller Type "C" Countersinks, (Sold Seperately) when installing Flat and Oval Head wood screws.
Pilot bit sizes shown below for W.L.Fuller brand taper point drill bits represent the bit’s Major Diameter (The measured diameter at it’s largest point), not the smaller size of the tapered section where the screw threads will be engaged in the material. These taper point pilot drill bit size recommendations SHOULD NOT be used or followed when creating screw pilot holes using traditional straight shank Jobber style drill bits. Unlike taper point bits the pilot diameter sizing when using straight shank drill bits should always be smaller than the diameter of the screw being installed.
