Plug taps have a 3 to 5 thread chamfer and perform similarly to Taper taps by progressively removing the material at the beginning of the tapping process until a full thread is created. In some instances a Plug Taps can be used to start holes but there is more turning resistance than with a Taper tap due to fewer lead threads being chamfered. Plug taps are ideal for use after a Taper tap and before a Bottom tap to get threads closer to the bottom of a blind tapped hole. They can also be used for through-hole tapping.
